Mission Bazaar December 6th & 7th

It is looking like I'll be at the Mission Bazaar on December 6th and 7th with a couple of my friends! So exciting! It will be at the Mission Armory Community Center located at 1800 Mission Street, San Francisco.

I'm busily making exciting new things to sell. I'm not sure exactly what to expect since this will be my first show. Hopefully I'll see some of you there!

Either 70s rock star or comic book hero?

I don't think that's Tim Gunn approved.

grown up goth lip gloss

YSL Gloss Pur Black

Its even blacker than you might imagine! Glossy shine with no sparkles.

When I first applied it It looked great. It has a fruity mango scent. Nice texture on the lip.

After about an hour by itself (not over a lip pencil or a lipstick) it does start to migrate to the edge of the lip which is not an ideal thing. I'll try it again tomorrow with lipstick and lip pencils and see how that goes.

Review: lipsticks that won't poison you...

I love my mac products don't get me wrong. And testing shows most Mac products to be on the "safe" list for lead.

But for daily wear, especially when eating is involved I tend to stick to some more safe and natural products.

Here's some products I know to be safer. Which is to say: Free of artificial colors, petrolatum, mineral oil, phthalates or parabens, and mostly Lead free.

Most of these you can find in any organic food store that carries beauty products. Whole foods carries the Juice Beauty, Alba (TerraGloss) and the KissMyFace brands.

Hemp Organics Lipstick-Ruby I love this color. Its a nice dark burgandy red (with cool tones not orange) It's le.ad free and made from hemp oil and beeswax. Relatively scent free. It's just like a normal lipstick in texture and wearing power. If you want a safe alternative to regular lipstick this is an excellent product. It comes in a wide variety of colors too.

$14.99 a good value and good product

Hemp Organics lip tint stick I like the wine and the berry colors. This is a nice compact lip tint. Not too tacky, easy to apply. Has a darker color than some of the lip glosses.

$5.99 a good value

Hemp Organics lip gloss While it comes in a number of colors, once applied it doesn't really have much of a color. It's a slightly oily moisturizing gloss. Lasting power is low. Relatively unscented. It's okay but not my favorite of the options as there is no real color in it. I think I got it in "bliss" but it doesn't seem like most of the colors have a strong color at all.

$9.99 Not a great value, you can find this somewhat cheaper at health food stores.

Kiss My Face 3wayColor for lips, cheeks and eyes-Ruby This has a very moisturizing olive and mango butter, caster oil and lysine, with natural fruit flavors (grapefruit, pomegranate, raspberry and white grape).

As you might expect it has a yummy fruity scent.

The texture is a little oily, and for your lips that's pleasant. It's not tacky at all. I was less impressed in it's use for your cheeks and eyes. For the cheeks it works a little like a cheek stain would. For eyes, it doesn't really work, it quickly ends up creasing. In a pinch I might use it, but you definitely need a mirror to apply as it has quite a dark color and it is tricky to get it evenly spread. It's the darkest of the glosses I've tried. And a very nice color.

Another note is that on hot days you tend to get oil at the top first so you may need to smush the tube around a bit to blend the oil and color together again...or just rub the clear oil somewhere else :)

$6.95

Alba TerraGloss-blaze

This has a sweet vanilla smell. A little strong but it's pleasant. This is a good moisturizing liquid gloss.

Feels a little tacky just as most lip gloss does. I like this one since while it has color, it's not so dark that you need a mirror to precisely apply. I probably use this one most. Garnet is another good color though both are about the same color on.

This lasts about as long as any typical lipgloss. So you need to reapply every couple hours. (mileage may vary) Good value for the price. $4.99

Juice Beauty-SPF 8 Lip MoisturizersI like Playful which is their darkest one. (comes in a set of three colors though)

These have a nice fruity scent. They are particularly handy to tuck into a pocket as they're a nice small chapstick size. They're nice moisturizing glosses and not particularly waxy.

Easy to apply, not dark enough that you need a mirror for precision. Lasts about the same amount of time as a normal chapstick type product. So you'll need to reapply throughout the day.

$15.00 for set of 3.

Dr. Hauschka Lip Colour Stone Colours Collection Lip Colour 03. This is a somewhat transparent lip paint it comes in a small flat case with a mirror and a brush, everything you need to apply is right there.

It feels really moisturizing and nice. No noticable smell.

This is a fairly expensive product. I got it at a store closing sale, so I'm not sure if I'd pay full price for it. $26.95

To be avoided

Burt's Bee products are now owned by Clorox. Which if that isn't incentive enough..

Burt's Bee Lip shimmers-Merlot IT BURNS!!! It's so minty it actually burns. I don't know who would buy this product. Most of their lip products have this burning lip feature so I haven't tried any of their other products.

Besides burning the color is ok but it's very waxy like chapstick. Wholely unpleasant. Plus do you really trust Clorox to put out a safe product? I'm skeptical. And the findings for this particular color seem to support that as it had lead in it:
Burtʹs Bees  Lip Shimmer Merlot    0.09  Burtʹs Bees    MA  08/29/07  (download full report from link further down).

Dr Bronners organic lip balms
Unless you really love peppermint avoid it. It's so minty it tingles. Didn't have much color, and it was a bit waxy. I generally like Dr. Bronners products but this one wasn't a winner for me. Perhaps after the burning episode with the Burt's Bee I was a little gun shy of the extra minty lip balm.

Peace-Keeper lip paintEmpowered. This is a pretty standard lipstick, it's a little on the waxy side but has good opaque coverage. Smells a little crayon waxy, but not too bad. This color is a nice deep red, with a slightly cool tone. Like most dark lipsticks you'll need a mirror to apply.
That said, one of their other lipsticks tested showed that it had detectable levels of lead. (wish I'd seen that before I bought this ew!) "Peacekeeper  Paint Me Compassionate    0.12  Peacekeeper    MA  08/27/07 " See page ten of the link below for the full report.

You can download the pdf report on lead in lipsticks here. from the safecosmetics.org site, see page 10 for specific brands and colors.

I was surprised to find this lipstick for sale in basically every health food store that sells make up. Lead might be technically natural but certainly not safe.

As to how much should you worry? I personally discovered that I had heavy metal poisoning from both lead and mercury which is why I started looking into this. My mercury levels were so high they were off the little graph provided for the report. Lead was also very high. I did chelation for several months and my levels are lowered but still high. Honestly I suspect that some of this is from our water and food. But I don't eat that much fish, and not fish that is supposed to be high in mercury. So who can tell where it came from really. But there's no reason to knowingly eat lead. A moment on the lips forever on the hips.

Marchesa models look anorexic even to me.

I've been rather thin all my life and I've often defended the "anorexic look". These are a bit more than that. This poor girl in pink is so skinney she looks like one of those ads for starving children in africa.

I must also say the I just rolled out of bed and couldn't bother to do my hair look doesn't work for me either.

Perhaps these overly starved girls were cheaper because none of the other labels wanted to take them after all the banning of starved models in Europe. But seriously I'm a little pudgey to my mind with my just barely normal BMI of 18.5 I think that might be taking it a bit too far. Many of these girls like me have thin frames which are not taken into account with the BMI system. My weight on a "big boned girl" would be barely enough I'm sure, but on me, let's just say I've got some extra flab.

it seems like there could be a sensible approach to this. But I'm also a little tired of the starved 14 year old look.

Models with boobs might be a good start.

Mac Cult of Cherry

I love this collection.
In particular the lipsticks are great, especially bing and kirsh (which may be completely sold out). And the lipglass jampacked is great.  You get the dark bruised lip which I love.

Tempting is my favorite eyeshadow quad. I love the bright green, Tempting. And the others blend nicely with it: Next to Nothing, Dark Edges, and Sharp.

I've also recently discovered the wonderful liquidlast liner. This stuff really stays on you can sleep in it and wake up with it still intact..not that you would do that, but you could! I love the bright Greenplay (which goes nicely with the Tempting quad), and also Inkspill is a nice black with green shimmer. And Powerplum is a lighter metallic plum. I have all three!

I also discovered Fluidline. This doesn't stay on quite as well as the liquid last but it will certainly see you through the night even if you accidentally rub your eyes. It's easy to put on with the angle brush and get that 1950s dramatic liner look.

Of course to get this long lasting makeup off you need to get Gently off eye and lip makeup remover. Otherwise it will be on there for days. Make sure you shake it before using. I also like the Eye Wipes, but they won't get the liquidlast off without a lot of scrubbing. But they're nice and gentle for the rest of your makeup.

I've been a big fan of Studio Fix for  more than a decade. If you're going to be on camera this is the stuff you need, you won't shine or glare on screen. And it has good coverage to even out your skin without needing to use a foundation and a powder.

For those bad skin days I just use a little of the Select SPF 15 in dabs around the offending areas and then blend out the edges with your finger  and cover with Studio Fix. They make all the special concealers, but I find this easier to use for under eye darkness and red spots.

Harajuku Lovers perfume

The packaging is lovely.

I quite liked Love, fruity sweet and girly.

"Love, a sensuous floral concocted by Yves Cassar and Pascal Gaurin of International Flavors
& Fragrances, has top notes of sparkling bergamot, pink pomelo, peach and bamboo leaf mist; a
heart of watery peony, living hydroponic lace rose, jasmine sambac, nectarine blossom, creamy
paperwhites and Egyptian jasmine, and a drydown of petally ylang, creamy vanilla orchid, sensual
musk and blond wood.

G smells like 1985 laying out in the sun with your coconut scented suntan oil on, which is not a bad thing. Or pina coladas on the beach. A little pinapple a little coconut.

G, a modern gourmand by Steve DeMarcado of Fragrance Resources, has top notes of crisp mandarin,
fresh coconut and apple skin; a heart of jasmine sambac, soft freesia and magnolia vapor, and a
drydown of coconut cream, white sandalwood and cottonwoods.

Music is harder to pin down. A bit fruity and dark and a strong floral punch. Not really my thing.

Music, a delicate floral by Honorine Blanc of Firmenich, has top notes of clementine and
sparkling pear; a heart of jasmine sambac, sweet pea and honeysuckle, and a drydown of vanilla,
skin musk and sleek woods.

Lil' Angel is very sweet, in the way of a two year old girl covered in sweets. I don't like this one

Lil' Angel, a fruity floral by Givaudan's Christophe Raynaud, has top notes of raspberry,
cranberry, blackberry and pineapple; a heart of pear blossom, candied violet and sugared rose,
and a drydown of lollipop accord, hinoki wood and crystal amber.

Baby smells like baby powder. Personally I think this is NEVER a good thing. Who wants to smell like a baby's ass? I guess if you do, save yourself the cash and just use real baby powder!

Baby, a powdery musk by Firmenich's Harry Fremont, has top notes of freesia, bergamot and white
rose; a heart of orange flower, tiare flower and jasmine petals, and a drydown of white musk,
soft woods, heliotrope, vanilla and violet.

I really love the little containers though! They're so cute!
